For this easy puff pastry dessert recipe, you need just a handful of ingredients. These Quick Toaster Strudels are perfect for breakfast, a snack, or even dessert. They combine the flaky, buttery goodness of puff pastry with a sweet fruit filling. With just a few simple ingredients, you can recreate this classic treat in no time.
Ingredients (7)
1 package (17.3 oz) frozen puff pastry (2 sheets), thawed but cold
1/2 cup fruit jam (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, etc.)
1 large egg (for egg wash)
1 tablespoon water
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Steps (8)
Preheat the Oven: preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This ensures the oven is hot enough to bake the puff pastry to a golden brown.
Prepare the Puff Pastry: thaw the puff pastry sheets but keep them cold. Roll them out on a lightly floured surface and cut each sheet into 6 equal rectangles. You should have 12 rectangles in total.
Add the Filling: place 1-2 tablespoons of fruit jam (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, etc.) in the center of 6 of the rectangles. Spread it out slightly, leaving a small border around the edges.
Seal the Strudels: place the remaining 6 rectangles on top of the jam-covered ones. Use a fork to crimp the edges together, sealing the jam inside.
Prepare the Egg Wash: in a small bowl, whisk together 1 large egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush this egg wash over the tops of the strudels. This will give them a beautiful golden color when baked.
Bake the Strudels: place the strudels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy.
Prepare the Icing: while the strudels are baking, prepare the icing. In a bowl, mix together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.
Finish the Strudels: once the strudels are baked and slightly cooled, drizzle the icing over the top. You can use a spoon or a small piping bag for this.
Additional tips
- To Make More: Simply double the ingredients to make 12 strudels.
- Seal Well: Make sure to seal the edges of the pastry well to prevent the filling from leaking out during baking.
- Chill Before Baking: If the pastry becomes too warm while working with it, chill the assembled strudels in the refrigerator for 10 minutes before baking to ensure they puff up nicely.
- Flavor Variations: You can use any type of fruit jam or even chocolate hazelnut spread for different flavor combinations.
