Ingredients (10)
1 pound (2 sheets) Puff Pastry, thawed according to package instructions
1 tablespoon All-Purpose Flour (for dusting)
1 ¼ pounds Granny Smith Apples
1 tablespoon Unsalted Butter
¼ cup Brown Sugar (lightly packed)
½ teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
0.12 teaspoon Salt
1 Egg (+ 1 tablespoon water for egg wash)
½ cup Powdered Sugar
2 tablespoons Heavy Whipping Cream
Steps (6)
Prepare the Apples: peel, core, and chop the Granny Smith apples into small pieces.
Cook the Filling: in a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
Add the chopped apples, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt.
Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the mixture is thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Let it cool.
Prepare the Puff Pastry: preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheets and cut each sheet into 4 equal squares.
Assemble the Turnovers: place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of each puff pastry square.
Brush the edges of the pastry with the egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water).
Fold each square into a triangle and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
Bake the Turnovers: place the turnovers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash. Bake for 20 minutes or until the turnovers are golden brown and puffed.
Prepare the Glaze: in a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and heavy whipping cream until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the warm turnovers before serving.
Additional tips
- To Make More: Simply double the ingredients to make 16 turnovers.
- Prevent Filling Leaks: To minimize filling leaks, make sure to crimp the edges of the pastry tightly and use an egg wash to seal them.
- Chill Before Baking: Refrigerate the assembled turnovers for about 20 minutes before baking. This helps the pastry hold its shape and prevents excessive spreading.
- Freeze for Later: You can freeze the unbaked turnovers. When ready to bake, place them directly in the oven from the freezer and add a few extra minutes to the baking time.
